About Us
Who are we?
The Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA is one of the oldest in the country and was founded in 1945. We are still based on the original property, which we own. Through the years many refurbishments, developments and expansions have taken place.
(Roodepoort Krugersdorp Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals)
We are proud to be the voice for so many voiceless animals. Where education and proactive assistance fails, the legal route is taken to ensure we speak out for all animals who are abused, and cruelly treated by society. The Roodepoort SPCA has been the voice for many, many animals over the past 76 years and our voices will continue being heard.
Education and community upliftment are essential elements of our work. The staff at the Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA are committed to preventing cruelty to all animals and improving the quality of lives for all animals.
Inspectors
Our Inspectorate team are all qualified Animal Welfare Inspectors, authorized by a Magistrate to carry out and to perform duties associated with the Animals Protection Act No 71 of 1962.
SPCA Inspector strongly believe in the 5 FREEDOMS;
- Freedom from hunger and thirst – by ready access to fresh water and a diet to maintain full health and vigor.
- Freedom from discomfort – by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.
- Freedom from pain, injury, or disease – by prevention, rapid diagnosis, and treatment.
- Freedom to express normal behavior – by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal’s own kind; and
- Freedom from fear and distress – by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering
An SPCA Inspectors duties are limitless:
- Investigating animal cruelty complaints,
- Obtaining evidence for dockets, to compiling dockets, to being expert witness in court cases,
- Assisting an animal which may find itself in need of human intervention,
- Establishments where animals are found is where an SPCA Inspector will be found checking and ensuring the Five Freedoms are provided to all animals.
- Proactive work is one of the most important tools to an SPCA Inspector. Prevention is better than cure. Pro-active work once again involves many areas,
- Educating owners of animals on the importance of good animal husbandry,
- Undertaking inspections of abattoirs, hawking sites, animal breeders, pet shops, grooming parlours, zoos, circuses, security companies and any other facility where an animal may be found.
The Roodepoort Krugersdorp SPCA reaches out daily to our underprivileged areas to provide much needed assistance. Our staff visit informal settlements and with the cooperation and consent of the animals’ owners, bring animals into our SPCA to be sterilised.
Where over population of unwanted animals is found is where animal cruelty festers.
