Adopting a Dog
GREAT, but first ask yourself these question.
- Do you have enough quality time to spend with a dog?
- Do you have time to train a dog?
- Are you financially stable to provide for a new furry family members needs? All pets need good nutritional food, annual veterinary vaccinations and deworming and the times when your furry friend may get sick or injured they need the services of a veterinarian.
- If you live in a complex are you allowed to own a pet?
- Is your property large enough to keep a pet?
- Do you have a kennel for a dog?
- Will the dog sleep inside or outside?
- Dogs need regular grooming, long or curly dogs may require a visit to the groomers every month. Can you afford monthly dog groomers?
- Who will take care of the family pet when the family go away on holiday?
- Many dogs are petrified of loud noises, will you be home to comfort them during fireworks season and heavy storms?
If all the above questions are positive, then start researching the breed of dog that will fit in with your families life style.
- Some breed are very vocal, or very active, or very possessive over their owners, some breeds are diggers, the right breed of dog must be found for the family.
- A Jack Russel Terrier or Fox Terrier may be small but they are very active.
- An English Bull dog may not need as much exercise or space but they can have respiratory problems.
- Certain dog breeds can be nippy towards children.
- If you live in a complex what are the rules about pets
- The height of your perimeter walling is it suitable for the breed of dog you family are interested in adopting?
Adoption Process
All documents are to be completed at the SPCA premises by the person taking responsibility for the dog.
A pre home application questionnaire is answered honestly and a prehome inspection fee of R150.00 non-refundable must be paid.
You have to be over 18 years of age to adopt and take on the legal responsibility of a pet.
We will require the following documents:
- Copy of ID
- Proof of residence
- If you reside in a complex a letter from the body Corporate giving permission to keep the adopted dog in the complex and a copy of the complex Rules.
- If you are renting, we require a letter from the property owner giving you permission to keep a dog on their property
- Copy of your existing dog’s vaccination and deworming certificates
Once we have received all you documents an Inspector will visit your home and check that you have all the requirements needed for the breed of dog or cat you are adopting.
Once the pre home inspection has been approved you will be asked to come into the SPCA to complete the adoption contract and to pay the adoption fee.
Your furry family member will be sent to be sterilised, vaccinated, dewormed and a microchip will be implanted for identification.
You will be contacted when your new family member is ready to go home.
Your new family member will go home with a collar, ID disc and Microchip.
That is when the fun starts and happy life together as a family.
